ATTENTION: ONE WEEK TILL CHRISTMAS. ONE. WEEEEEEK.

How on earth can this month, this YEAR have flown by so incredibly fast? That’s insane. That’s… wow, I’m getting old. In 2016 I CAN DRIVE. 2016 IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. I’m just a ball of excitement & crazies!

Currently Reading: Okay, okay, I’m jumping on the bandwagon. Finally, finally, yes, I am reading Divergent. After basically every single person I know PLUS my grandma (yes, my grandma. She’s so cool and hip. Hi grandma!) has read and told me to read it a hundred times, I’m doing it. I’m joining the club. For once maybe I’ll know what people are talking about! Whooo!

Currently Watching: GILMORE GIRLS. Guys. This is insanity. I finished season three in three stinkin’ days!!! AHHHH WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE. Spending my Christmas break well, I suppose. Because. Well. Jess and Rory.

I mean, it’s kind of getting out of hand. It’s seriously all I doooooo. And yes it is on Netflix if you want to make me a very happy Emily. (in fact, whilst typing this on the couch as my parents search through the guide for what to watch I requested you-know-what and they denied the request. bahumbug.)

emily

Currently wishing for: A bazillion things. But Christmas is seven days away right??!! But mostly a new kindle paper white. Books. Helloooo. Also – it’s as close as you can get to a real book on a tablet! All I want for Christmaaaaas is yoouuu a kindle paper whiiiiite…

Currently eating: The peppermint milkshake from Chick-Fil-A. Holly-jolly happiness in a cup. And I have to admit… I like it even better than the peppermint mocha or frappuccino at Starbucks. Mm-mm-mmmm.

Currently listening to: Pssshhhh what am I not listening to? I have a very wide and eclectic taste in music. But of course, mostly recently it’s been Christmas songs, especially While You Were Sleeping by Casting Crowns. I’ve heard this song for years, but it really hit me as I listened to it this year. Had me tearing up.

Oh little town of Bethlehem // Looks like another silent night // Oh Bethlehem, what have you missed while you were sleeping // For God became a man // And stepped into your world today

United States of America // Looks like another silent night // As we’re sung to sleep by philosophies // That save the trees and kill the children // America, what will we miss while we are sleeping

(P.S. if you want to listen to my other favorite songs, you can see my playlist here. They’re all wonderful, and I’m always adding songs to it, so go to the very bottom for my most *recent* favorites. Then She Appeared is the newest one and I’m in looooove.) 🙂

Currently Procrastinating: Reading. I have a hundred books to read. And I really want to read four more before 2016 rolls around, so I can meet my goal of 70 books this year. Originally, the goal was 50, but now I’m at 66, so I thought I’d extend the goal. I’m *thinking* I want to go even further next year and shoot for 100, but I’m super nervous!! Can I do it?? As I said, I’m reading Divergent, but honestly it’s not what I want to read right now (chill out, it IS really good and I am NOT disappointed)… it’s just not the genre I’m into at the moment. How can I possibly have a bazillion books on my shelf to read and not want to read ONE?! Sigh. (Anyone know a clean, easy romance to get into??)

Currently Fangirling About: My signed copy of Cinder by Marissa Meyer. EEEEP I LOVE YOU BROOKE.

emily

Currently Cuddling: My cat Maisy. She’s crazy. And bipolar, I think. Also, we’ve established that she has some anxiety issues. After nearly two months of having our dog Beasley, she stills hates him. So she spends 95% of her time in my room, attacking your feet from underneath my bed or getting fur all over my comforter and desk and every single surface she can get her paws on. But at night she really likes to cuddle. At first it was cute, because Maisy is normally very… detached. But now I think it’s because she gets lonely since I can’t ALWAYS be in my room and it’s becoming annoying. Poor Maisy. Last night I kicked her off the bed. (I mean, my HEAD.)

emily

Currently Loving: Christmas movies! I watched It’s A Wonderful Life and White Christmas for the very first time this year! Well, that’s not entirely true because my mom watches both every year, so I’d seen bits and pieces of them, but I sat down and watched all the way through this time. Can’t believe I’ve missed them!

so those are all the ‘currentlies’ (currentlys? currently’s?) i can think of for now, but talk to me in the comments! what have you been currently up to? i want to know your favorite songs we can listen together! and book recommendations! i always want those. merry almost-christmas!!

a christmas gift guide for the bookworm in your life

CHRISTMAS IS NINE DAYS AWAY. Nine. AHHHH I’m flipping out. Thankfully I’ve just got one more person on my Christmas shopping list to buy for, but they’re not a bookworm. Ugh, as unfortunate as it may be, I have hardly any bookworm friends offline. (But thanks to the glorious invention that is the internet, I have all of YOU!)

emily

The point is, have no bookworm friends, but it’s possible that you do, and as a professional bookworm myself, I think I have an idea or two of what to get your bookworm friend. (Aside from the obvious, and that would be books.)

So if you’re at a total blank about what to get for your bookworm friend last-minute, I’ve got you covered.

Now, bookish paraphernalia is a must. T-shirts, sweatshirts, bookmarks, posters. The whole nine yards. These are my favorites. From cheaper to cheapest, I too work on a small budget so don’t you worry your pretty little mind. (By the way, fam & friends, these are great gifts for the bookworm in YOUR life, hint hint.)

hint hint hint taylor swift dropping hints

Shirts are the best. I mean, they keep you covered, which is a must in the United States. (I mean, I don’t know about your country, but we can’t just walk around minus clothes.) And shirts with entire novels written on them are the best. Only the best for your bookworm, of course. Litographs has a boatload of cool stuff for bookish people. My grandma bought me a shirt – the Pride & Prejudice one, duh –  and I’m in looooove. Plus if your shirt comes with an odd inky pen mark on it like mine did, they send a second one for free, no questions asked. So now I’ve got two perfectly good shirts! Wash one on Tuesday, where the other on Tuesday, and switch on Wednesday.

One whole book! ON A SHIRT.

If your worm is more a mug person and you’re not sure on sizes, this mug is absolutely adorable. I bought one for myself for only eight bucks at Barnes & Noble, and let me tell you, I get great joy from drinking from this mug. If I’m feeling guilty for not reading while drinking from said mug, I can feel better because there are books ON the mug!

emily

Oh, and if that doesn’t work out, but you still like the design… B&N has a whole slew of stuff with this drawing on it. Notebooks, cooler bags (which I don’t own but would love to) so it works. If a bookworm likes to read, she likes to write, right? It’s a given. And if she (oops or he) doesn’t like to write they should. They could write about books. And everybody likes food (and if they don’t it’s time for you to have a serious talk with your friend) so boom. Coolers.

emily

Now, if you are a crafty person and happen to like DIY (kudos to you) I’ve got two ideas: for the easy route, bookmarks. I’ve got a collection of them, and I adore getting new ones. Get creative! Punch a hole in the top & string a ribbon through it. Find a bookish quote, or get it laminated. Perhaps decorate it with themes from a favorite book of your bookworm’s. Construction paper will work. Card stock is always nice, too. Annnd… if you want to get super nifty, check out these tutorials my pen pal Brooke sent me. She made me a book necklace from one of my favorite books because she’s the best bookish friend a bookworm could ask for. (You can find them here & here.)

emily

This is the one Brooke made for me! EEP I’M SO IN LOVE!

Now, I can’t speak for your bookworm, but I for one love my bookshelf. I love adding new books and seeing my collection grow and grow and grow and grow and grow and – you get the picture. But the thing is, I don’t have just books on my bookshelf. Well, sure, YES that is 99% the majority, because it is a BOOK shelf, but… some of the books aren’t actually books.

emily

I’ve gotten two of these secret thingamabobs recently, and love them! You can stash candy (which I tried to do but then eat it before I can ‘stash’ it) and diaries (if it were small) and money and secret-y things. I don’t know what your bookworm would put in it, GOSH! But I’m sure they’ll find something. Plus, these thingamabobs can be decorative. Look! This one Brooke gave me matches my old books from my great-grandma almost perfectly! (and no, I will not tell you what I put it in it.) (mostly because I haven’t decided yet.)

Now, that’s about all I can brainstorm for today… but, you know, you could go the old-fashioned route and buy books for your bookworm! Or, if you can’t think of any books your bookworm would like to read, buy a gift card! Please. The last thing your bookworm needs is to feel guilty for not wanting to read your book, and besides, we like shopping. For books. The possibilities are ENDLESS. $10 will usually suffice, or you could go crazy and give us 15. Life is easy when you’re shopping for a bookworm. A bookstore gift card will never be turned down.

stay tuned for more life lessons from emily. next week: how to easily care for your bookworm! just add water!

hope i helped! have a merry christmas & a happy bookworm!

P.S. In case you don’t hear from me in a while, it’s because I’ve just finished season three of Gilmore Girls in THREE DAYS. And no I don’t need my heart in case you’re wondering. I CAN’T HANDLE THIS.  emily

red queen by victoria aveyard

Title: Red Queen

Author: Victoria Aveyard

Series: The Red Queen Series

Publisher: Harper Teen

Source: library

About: This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart …

emily emily emily emily

First: sorry I missed my review yesterday! Busy  busy stuff. But here it is today so I’ll get into it! 🙂 If you haven’t read Red Queen, you need to get on top of your game. I’m tellin’ ya, it’s the next big thing!

emily

I was wary about it because… whale, I judged the cover. Because… BLOOD. I don’t do blood. It grosses me out and… no. I avoid it at all costs. I’m not touching a book with blood on the cover.

BUT. But. Secretly, just a little bit, but don’t tell anybody… the cover is kind of endearing to me now. Now that I’ve finished the book. And know what it’s all about. Because it’s kind of amazing.

There is an official book trailer, but ignore it because it’s not that great. Just watch this.

The beginning: I was hooked. Futuristic, dystopian world. Boy best friend & a supposedly “ordinary” teenage girl. Yes, a tad cliche, but what can I say? I’m a sucker for an old plot line.

So yes. I enjoyed it. Thoroughly, actually.

The middle was slow but there were cute boys (I have a vivid imagination) so that kept me reading. Buuuuut. Buuuut… I got bored. At times, there just WASN’T enough action and information! And I get frustrated easily. It took me six days to read this book, and only because I don’t like DNF’ing a book. And also maybe because I’m still (despite getting annoyed many many times over other certain books) a faithful reader and I hoped it would get better.

It will & I SHALL love it!

… And it did. Fifty pages before the last. Soooo that was frustrating. Yes, I was interested at some points throughout the middle of the book because. Well I can’t spoil anything. But TWO BOYS. Brothers, to be exact. A girl at war with her heart. And her country, for that matter. Which happens to be ruled by said two brothers. It wasn’t COMPLETELY dull. I was interested! Enough to keep reading!

And I just get too attached to characters in general. Any book, really. They can be sucky but I’ll love em.

And really, I’m giving this book the benefit of the doubt because it’s the first of a series (possibly a trilogy, to be exact, but I’m not positive and I’m too lazy to look it up.) The point is, it has a great plot set up. Most of the time, in series I get ridiculously involved in (The Selection, The Lunar Chronicles, The Ascendance Trilogy… the list goes on) the first book is never my favorite. So when we’re talking about the middle of the first BOOK, we’re really talking about only a sixth of the actual story. I’m giving it time. (Look at me being all giving & nice.)

The romance was squeal-worthy. Confusing. But squeal-worthy. A roller coaster, to be sure.

emily

NOW. The plot twist. Ahhhhhh the plot twist. I spoiled it for myself.

I READ THE SYNOPSIS FOR THE SECOND BOOK WHYYYYYYY. Fair hint: DON’T DO THAT.

I wasn’t that surprised about it when I spoiled it for myself. First I was like: “OOHHHHH MY GOSH NO EMILY NO” and then I was thinking: “Daggumit no way jose.” And then: “I don’t think I would have seen it coming.”

It’s true. I’m far too gullible and trustworthy and it would have shocked me. So if you’re not a professional, no-emotions-must-not-get-attached-absolutely-no-way-kind-of-person… then you might see it coming. But if you’re trusting and naive like me, then you’ll be utterly shocked. To put it in a nutshell: it was a great twist. I didn’t – wouldn’t have – seen it coming.

Sooooo… minus one star for the slowness. And, as much as I hate to do it, minus half a star for the sort of same/same plot line. I’m getting a *little eetle weetle* sick of these books. C’mon, YA, I want new stuff.

BUT it does get 3.5 stars for the sheer wonderfulness of Victoria Aveyard. Can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

so what about you? do you want to read this book?

stacking the shelves #26 & a christmas melanie dickerson giveaway!

Hi everybody! Gosh, it’s been a while since I’ve done a Stacking the Shelves, hasn’t it? In case you’re not familiar with Stacking the Shelves, it’s all about sharing the books you’ve gotten this week – physical, e-book, from the library, or book store, hosted by Tynga’s ReviewsIt’s been a few weeks since I’ve done a STS and I’m excited to finally be back to it, because guys. This stack looks pretty darn awesome.

emily

Whale, it is short… but DON’T JUDGE A STACK BY ITS HEIGHT.

Yesterday my Christmas gifts from the best pen pal in the whole wide world  – you know her, she comments on your blog all the time – hi Brooke! – came and ahhhhhh I. Just. Flipped. Out.

Up there on the top of the stack we’ve got The Mysterious Benedict Society, which I’ve been meaning to read since third or fourth grade so it’s about time I get to that. From what Brooke has told me, something about it gives her that Series Of Unfortunate Events feel, even though they’re not very similar. So I’m anxious to read it ’cause fifth grade me would be all over that.

Next… NEXT…. Ohhhh mah Lordy folks, it’s While You Were Gone, the sequel to Now That You’re Here, which I finished at 3 AM because of the cuteness of Danny and Eevee and thanks to my good friend Hayden. Fun fact: Hayden’s mom is a friend of the author, Miss Amy Nichols. It’s that whole 6-people-away-from-knowing-everyone-in-the-world thing, ya know? (Which, on a side note, means I know a lot of cool authors.) Hayden was sweet enough to lend me both books so I returned her the first one in exchange for this one and it’s going to be a fun Christmas break, I can tell you that.

And last, but CERTAINLY not least… we have CinderPretty sure you’ve heard of it? At least on this blog, anyway, huh? Weeeelll I OWN IT NOW! AHHH I love Brooke so so much. But that’s not even the best part.

emily

IT’S SIGNED! By the Marissa Meyer, the author of The Lunar Chronicles, THE Marissa Meyer. And it’s even personalized. To me. Emily. (Insert temporary made-up last name here.) Of course, Brooke had the amazing opportunity to actually meet Marissa Meyer (meanwhile I’m over here drooling when she comes back telling me all about it, so Miss Meyer and I have a lot to talk about why she didn’t come down to The Georgia) annnnnd. AHHHH. I’m just a ball of excitement this morning! I love ya Brooke!

So those were the books of this week! Hopefully it won’t be too much longer till the next Stacking the Shelves because Christmas is just THIRTEEN DAYS AWAY. Thirteen days, thirteen days! Less than two weeks! Which means todaaaayyy, just for fun, because it is the season of giving, I bring you a giveaway hosted by the amazing Melanie Dickerson. (And a shout-out to Miss Dickerson who was kind enough to sponsor the giveaway. Thank you!)

You all know how much I love Melanie Dickerson’s books (you can see my reviews for The Huntress Of Thornbeck Forest, The Princess Spy, and The Captive Maiden), particularly her fairy tale retellings, and her Christian spin on it. That’s why I had such a hard time deciding which book to giveaway, as Miss Dickerson was happy to give a copy of any one of them. But… because it is her newest book, and I know several of you are just as excited as I am to read it, I decided to go with The Golden Braid, which just hit shelves November 17th, and you can learn more about here.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

So enter and enjoy! The giveaway ends December 19th. I will email Miss Dickerson the winner and she will have your book sent out to you! Oh – and one more thing – the giveaway will be open to U.S. residents ONLY please!

what books did you get this week? and what melanie dickerson books have you read? do you want to read any? which ones? and tell me – what do you think of my copy of cinder??!! ahhhh i’m so so excited!

Emily

the amazing you tag!

Hey guys! I was tagged to do this forever ago but finally it’s here for yooouuuu! I love tags so much and it works when I get blogger’s block (which happens to be a lot lately, sigh.) So here goes another tag! This one I was tagged by the lovely Izel, so thanks girl!

(x)

You’re on a deserted island, and you find a cave. What would you expect to find in it? Bats? I’m not sure, that’s just the first thing that popped into my head. Hopefully gold. ‘Cause that would be awesome. As long as I had a big boat to take it home with me. I mean, do you KNOW how many books I would buy?!

If you could have one superpower, which would you pick? Be able to go inside a book. I wouldn’t want to bring a fictional character INTO our world, because I don’t want to scare my babies – reality is a cruel, cruel place, after all. And why would I want to stay here anyway?! Our world is so – so… blech. OR… invisibility. I am a sneaky sneaky person and I’d love to be a fly on a wall in some conversations. (To find out what I’m getting for my Christmas presents, hello.) AND freaking out people… I’ve got a few enemies I’d like to take my revenge on… mwahahaha.

K I’m not a Miley Cyrus fan but I WAS a Hannah Montana fan and DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER THIS SONG?

What one song would you choose for the theme music for a movie about your life? Oh wow that’s a tough one. I love music, as you know. (I have quite the eclectic taste.) The first few songs that went through my mind were those of Michael Buble and Taylor Swift (my FAVORITE artists, so of course I’d love to have them sing about me on my movie.) (On a side note a movie about me would be the best movie ever.) But then I thought… a song about a boyfriend/girlfriend thing (EVEN THOUGH Tay has other songs and Mr. Buble has some amazing songs NOT about relationships)… the ultimate relationship I want to be remembered for is my relationship with God. And I think Britt Nicole’s song, All This Time, would be perfect for that.

Hiding there in my bedroom, so alone // I was doing my best, trying to be strong // No one to turn to // That’s when I met you

Every heartache and failure, every broken dream // You’re the God who sees, the God who rescued me // This is my story, this is my story

You can only wear one color for the rest of your life. What color would you pick? Purple. With my brown hair and hazel (green, but closer to brown) I’ve always thought purple looked nice on me. Specifically a dark, fallish purple. 🙂

What’s one thing you want to do that’s wild, crazy, or unusual? Whoa whoa whoa! Calm down here. I am Emily. Queen Of The Worry Warts. I don’t do wild, crazy, or unusual. The closest I get to “wild” is maybe wanting to get into a food fight. ALTHOUGH… I have been thinking lately it would be neat to dye the tips of my hair pink. I could make it work. Margot from Epic Reads anyone? But who knows? Maybe someday I’ll get some gumption and do something crazy!

If you had to give a speech to the whole world in five minutes, what topic would it be about? You know a lot of politicians have the same personality type as me. I could maybe see myself pursuing some sort of political career if I didn’t think the famous life was so horrible. (It wouldn’t be for me, I really like my privacy.) One thing you may not know is that I have really strong feelings about certain topics… I wouldn’t know where to START. Five minutes?! More like five hours. Abortion, persecution, government policies… gosh, what WOULD I say??

Two BMW gifs in a row, I’M ON A ROLL

You get to have lunch with any three famous people, who would they be? Marissa Meyer (’cause I’m reading her books and I need to give her a hug and let her know that I have fallen in love with her son Wolf) and Taylor Swift (because even though I’m not crazy about her newer songs I just think it would be awesome to say hi to her and then be able to tell everyone I know that I met Taylor Swift, because who doesn’t know who Taylor Swift is?!) annnnd… um… hmm. Bailee Madison? She’s pretty cute. Or Kiera Cass. I met her once but having lunch with her would be phenomenal. (Because I’m also in love with HER son Maxon.)

GET IT. CAUSE THIS GIF IS FROM A TS VIDEO???

What is your favorite smell and why? Anything fallish. Pumpkins, cinnamon… my mom always burns lots of candles in our house during the fall and it smells like Heaven!

Share one of your favorite quotes. “If you don’t see the book you want on the shelf, write it.” – Beverly Cleary

Give us two true statements about yourself and one false statement, and see if your followers can guess which one is false. 1) I have never flown on a plane. 2) I once slipped down the stairs and broke my arm. 3) I was bitten by a chipmunk. Can’t wait to see what you think is true or false, have fun guessing!

TAG YOU’RE IT: Trisha // Bella // LadyLiterature

heyyyy and by the way answer some of these in the comments! i’m so sorry i haven’t been answering you all lately, life’s been crazy. but i’m finally on break so talk to you soon!! be on the lookout for a giveaway tomorrow!

my love-hate relationship with school-required reading

Reading is FUUUUUN. I’ve never had a problem picking up a book and devouring page after page like a hungry word-eater. I’ve been a bookworm from the very beginning, folks. From The Boxcar Children (which I discovered in 2nd grade thanks to my teacher) to The Book Thief (also a teacher-recommended read) it’s been real.

emily

But when a SCHOOL hands me a book and tells me to read it? It’s a completely different story. (Pun intended.)

Don’t get me wrong here. I am a firm believer that kids today, man, they need to read. In the age of technology, technology, technology, and video games and social media and so much more right at our fingertips, what would possess a kid to pick up a book anyway? Soooo lame. (Note the sarcasm.)

Take sixth grade for example. Yes, I was required to read books – nine books a quarter, which is nine books in nine weeks – books I got to choose. (I certainly wasn’t complaining.) But then – about halfway through the year, when I was relieved and felt sure I wouldn’t have to worry about school-required books – I was given this book. You might recognize the title? The Boy In The Striped Pajamas.

I had heard of it before, but I’m not sure when – if I hadn’t been required to read it in the sixth grade – I would have brought myself to pick it up. I had just gotten into book blogging and I wanted to read the latest YA debut. But then I begrudgingly began reading The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, and, my goodness. Boy am I glad I did! (Sort of. It was a terrible terrible book… but GOOD at the same time. Just read it and you’ll know what I mean!) 😉

emily

I love that book, and I would have missed out on a lot if my teacher hadn’t made me read it. And then that gets me thinking about other kids – other kids who don’t even read on a regular basis like me. What if they’re handed a book for school and they don’t want to read it… but it opens them up to a world of books and turns them into a reader??

“If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.” – J.K. Rowling

BUT THE THING IS… I still dislike the overall idea of school-required reading. In my home-school group this year and last, I have to read several books to write essays on. Examples: The Witch of Blackbird Pond; Carry On, Mr. Bowditch; The Phantom Tollbooth; The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe… some of them I enjoyed (The Witch of Blackbird Pond), and some of them I still didn’t. (Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.)

And the thing is, we need school-required reading. I’m all for it. But ARE YOU GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT? In my sixth grade Language Arts class, I remember we read several Greek myths among other folktale type stories and we answered a 10-question page about the story… and moved on. We never discussed the morals of the story, the lessons we could learn from it… and that really bummed me out. THAT is the most important aspect of a book – the part where it leaves you THINKING – and the public school system experienced missed out on that.

Later in 7th grade, I read The Giver and my friend read it with my previous school, and loved it… but from what she told me, the class really didn’t question it. What can this tell us about our world today? What would you do in Jonas’ position? A book like that… not even being questioned or discussed? It made me sad.

So there’s my love-hate relationship with reading. On the one hand, YEAH YEAH YEAH we need school-required reading… a) to introduce kids to books they wouldn’t otherwise read (myself included!) and b) to have discussion. But… sometimes I STILL don’t enjoy the books or get much from them (as much as I hate myself for it)… and what’s the point if kids don’t even think about WHY the school wanted them to read the book in the first place! (But hey I’m a home-schooler, my teacher makes SURE I discuss the books…) 😉 Food for thought.

until next time! what are YOUR thoughts on school-required books?

winter by marissa meyer

Title: Winter

Author: Marissa Meyer

Series: The Lunar Chronicles #4

Publisher: Feiwel & Friends

Source: Sam’s

About: Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

emily

5 stars!

Pssst. Hey you. Before you read this review, I suggest you check out my reviews for the three others in this series: Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress. Then come back here and fangirl with meeeeee!!

emily

Well. I finished.

I did it and I’m screaming on the inside and quickly dissolving into puddles of crazy fangirl and my stomach is doing somersaults over the cuteness of the people in this book and the crazy mess they turned me into.

I just CAN’T BELIEVE I FINISHED! So… let’s see… I began reading Cinder on November 7th and just finished the last book, Winter, on November 27th. Twenty days, everybody. Twenty days I read this series and it’s been an ongoing wild-emotional-crazy roller coaster of feels and squeals and I don’t know where to begin.

Winter, the last book in The Lunar Chronicles, is 827 pages long. EIGHT HUNDRED and twenty-seven pages. I was largely intimidated by this gargantuan size, and it took me an excruciating six days to finish. (Thanksgiving week, family coming in, all that sad stuff that takes my mind off of reading, *sigh*) I whizzed through the first three in two weeks, so I was a sad little human when it took me that long to finish. I wanted to know the ending SO BADLY! (Mostly cause Brooke and Izel kept holding stuff over my head, geez…) But even though the book is larger than what I typically read, and I was preparing myself for a few bored spots (I know I know what is wrong with me?!) there was not a single page where I was not immensely captivated by the perfection of Marissa Meyer.

The first page and I was in love with the newest character, Princess Winter. You see, she’s crazy.

No, I mean REALLY crazy. She’s a Lunar – that is, someone who lives on Luna, which is the moon – and all Lunars have a so-called gift to manipulate people into seeing anything they want them to see, to do anything they want them to do. But Winter has decided not to use her “gift,” and it’s making her hallucinate and literally lose her mind.

But she’s positively adorable! Naive and sweet and pretty much flawless. I was hooked.

Then there’s the rest of the gang from the past three books that I was eager to catch up on: Cinder, Iko, Kai, Scarlet, Wolf (*squeals*), Cress, and Thorne (*swoons*) Everything wrapped up so perfectly. Beforehand, Scarlet and Wolf were my main squeeze, guys. But I don’t know, in Winter… Cress and Thorne were pretty cute. Basically: all the couples in this book are totally swoon-worthy. Including Winter and her crush Jacin. I LOVED THEM ALL.

I was a little sad that I only got to know Jacin and Winter for one book though, because by the end of the book it still seemed like they could use a little character development. Even though of course I adored Winter, I still wanted her to be healed, so she wouldn’t be so crazy and this way… I don’t know, she could actually make sense of her mind and I could get to know her a little better. At least, see her in part of the book as her normal self. That said: the way Jacin looked at her as this perfect little baby and adored her so so much even the way she was… he was so selfless and I really loved this little romance going on and how Jacin loved Winter even through her craziness.

The plot line? Sublime. I couldn’t put it down for a second. It was… just… AMAZING!

Lucky for me that my mom bought me the copy of Winter… even though I got a little cream cheese pie on the cover… (yup I dropped a pie for Thanksgiving, imagine what a klutz I am) because I’m so excited to own it because it is DEFINITELY a re-read (or maybe a “skip-to-my-favorite-parts-read.”)

I’m just a pile of feels. I need help. I need understanding. Thank goodness I have all of you because I’d go crazy if I couldn’t talk to someone about this! So TALK! Go to the bottom of this post and spill your heart out. I don’t mind if the comment is long or rambly or what ’cause I NEED HELP OMG!

Oh and before I forget – thank you all so so much for forcing this series into my hands. I promise I won’t turn my nose up at another sci-fi book again because I have been proven wrong, imagine that. I’VE BEEN CHANGED FOR THE BETTER! I’ve got a feeling this is one of those books that will lead me into a whole other genre of awesomeness, so thank you for that. Love ya!

Farewell, Lunar Chronicles. Until I get my hands on the short stories…

Emily

which book next??

How do you choose what to read next?

Seriously. Please tell me, because I have struggled with this since the day I was born and I flipped through my book basket asking today’s most excruciating question: Brown-Bear, Brown-Bear or If You Give a Mouse a Cookie?

emily

Today the question is the same in various different ways. Red Queen or Going Rogue? Rose Under Fire or Divergent? Through the Looking Glass or Romeo Blue? (These are just a few of the books on my TBR that is fixing to topple right over onto my head, thank you very much. HELP ME!)

But the strange thing is, I don’t really want your help. If I asked you to tell me what to read next and you said “Rose Under Fire is a good one dear Emily,” then I would pick Red Queen. If you told me to read Divergent next (which I’m sure most of you will because yes I am a bit behind on that one) I would read Through the Looking Glass.

Nope I’m not. SORRY NOT SORRY!

I just want your CONDOLENCES, okay?! I need you to pat me on the back and give me some chocolate while I spend the ten minutes in between books scouring my bookshelf and going crazy mad. (It’s awful in that short period of time not knowing what you’re reading – not having a beautiful little friend on your nightstand waiting for you, you know?)

Which brings me to the next question: how long in between books?! Do you finish one book, close it up, declare it a 5-star read and pick up the next one almost immediately? Or do you read a book and make up your mind that there is absolutely NO book in the entire universe that can be as good as this one. So you can’t possibly choose what to read next and instead wallow in self-pity about how you have nothing to read. (Been there, done that, trust me.)

For me, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I get into a massive reading kick and have to have a book in my hands – it doesn’t matter what book, I just need to be reading SOMETHING. (Like back in the blissful summer of freedom when I read 13 or 14 books in a month. THOSE WERE THE DAYS…) but sometimes I just cannot bring myself to pick a book! Either they all look too boring to me (imagine that, IMAGINE THAT. I know, I know, and I’m sorry I feel this way sometimes, truly I am, but… but I DO!) or they… just… don’t… speak to me.

Doesn’t make sense does it. I can’t explain it either so just nod your head and pretend like you understand me.

So the point of this post is… well. This is odd, because it really HAS no point. I’m just here, somewhere in the world, on my couch droning on and on about my issues with books. And this is one of them where I just have NO ANSWER.

which is why i need your help! how do you choose what to read next? or is your predicament no better than mine? (in that case, let us mourn the time that could be spent reading while we are looking for that one special book.) to the comments we go! see you there!

Emily

books sometimes do not, in fact, consume my life. (unfortunately.)

I am a fast reader.

I am a fast typer. I am a fast writer. I am a fast chore-doer. I am a fast student in school. I am a fast runner. I tend to rush through a lot of things. Mostly so I can get back to reading. Because most of all, I am a fast reader.

emily

Except that the truth is, I don’t read every single book I pick up in a day, like some people. (Looking at you Cait.) Sometimes it takes me WEEKS to finish a book. (And I curl up in a little ball and hide under my bed with chocolate and Goodreads and Netflix and ignore the baby on my nightstand that I feel sososo guilty about.)

It completely depends. Sometimes I’m such a hurried pineapple that I read a book in a sitting because I CAN’T EAT-SLEEP-SHOWER-BREATHE UNTIL I FINISH THIS DANG BOOK.

emily

And sometimes it takes weeks because the sad truth is, some books are

B   O   R   I   N   G.

Sometimes – sometimes! – I am an imperfect human being (I KNOW. I KNOW. This cannot be! Not practically-perfect-in-every-way-Emily!) but it’s true! I am imperfect and lazy and I just. don’t. read.

For absolutely no reason at all, because what reason does one have to NOT READ?!

It’s a tragedy, bookworms! When I sit and endure the description of the positively dullness of some peoples’ lives – that would be the sad peoples who do not read – it makes me want to cry. Take my cousin Sydney, for instance. (*waves from cyberspace* HEY SYD!) Last week she was telling some friends of ours how much I read (and it made me extremely happy because yes I take the fact that I am never without a book as a high compliment) and she goes “I don’t like reading like Emily does.” In fact, this is not the first occurance of Dear Sydney’s oddness. She has declared before her dislike for reading. And she doesn’t even KNOW how sad and distressed and WORRIED for her it makes me!

Poor, poor Sydney.

SO. That is to say, I can’t imagine NOT reading books 23/7. (Minus the one hour for usual human habits. Eating, sleeping, doing school – because apparently I can’t drop out and spend my life as a hermit on the internet surrounded by my babies.) It makes me cranky to go too long without reading.

emily

Though it does happen. I’m not sure why. I suppose I just get distracted by the atrocities humans have created that distract me from doing anything but reading. You know, family stuff (blech.) Vacations (better.) School (nononononononoNOOO). Netflix (okay I digress Netflix is a-maaaaaaazzziiing and yes I do love it second to reading.) And I do get LAZY. Occasionally I just haven’t found the one gem of a book that pulls me out of my book slump.

I’ve been in quite a stint for the past few weeks until I finally picked up The Lunar Chronicles (which I demand you get RIGHT THIS INSTANT) and that makes me very very happy. And hopefully after this, I shall be right back into the groove of Typical Emily Reading Behavior and read… something. Red Queen? Divergent? Rose Under Fire? Going Rogue? Through The Looking Glass? HELP MEEEEE.

tell me, dear reader, how often do you read? what sadness takes your mind off of reading? and what’s on your tbr list? and what is the last AMAZING 5-bazillion-star-book you read? (mine is the lunar chronicles!) can’t wait to talk to you, as usual.

BOO! ‘Betcha weren’t expecting me to pop up in your inbox or feed or whatever you’re following me on where ya? Nope! That’s because today is Tuesday, and I haven’t posted on FTB on a Tuesday in quite some time. (Which is a bit of a shame, considering Top Ten Tuesday is on a Tuesday, and I miss doing that, so maybe I’ll start making an exception??) ANYWAY. Back to the topic at hand.

The reason I’m posting on Tuesday IS… drum roll… it’s time for the RESIST cover reveal!!

The young university students call out to the German people, begging them to not allow their consciences to become dormant, but to resist their tyrannical leader and corrupt government. Hans knows the consequences for their actions—execution for committing high treason—but firm in his convictions, he’s prepared to lose his life for a righteous cause.
