the witch of blackbird pond by elizabeth george speare

Title: The Witch of Blackbird Pond

Author: Elizabeth George Speare

Publisher: Laurel Leaf

Publication date: May 15, 1978

Source: Barnes & Noble

About: Orphaned Kit Tyler knows, as she gazes for the first time at the cold, bleak shores of Connecticut Colony, that her new home will never be like the shimmering Caribbean island she left behind. In her relatives’ stern Puritan community, she feels like a tropical bird that has flown to the wrong part of the world, a bird that is now caged and lonely. The only place where Kit feels completely free is in the meadows, where she enjoys the company of the old Quaker woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond, and on occasion, her young sailor friend Nat. But when Kit’s friendship with the “witch” is discovered, Kit is faced with suspicion, fear, and anger. She herself is accused of witchcraft!

I am so glad I finally got to read this. Elizabeth George’s story was a wonderful peek into what life was like in New England in the 1600s. I absolutely adored the main character, Kit, and all the characters began to grow on me more and more as the book progressed.

emily

This book was school-required reading, but I’ve wanted to read it for several years. I remember my fourth grade teacher had it in her classroom, but I veered away from it because of “The Witch” in the title. But rather than a story of an actual witch, The Witch of Blackbird Pond is about a witch trial in the seventeenth-century and a spirited girl who doesn’t fit into her aunt and uncle’s Puritan lifestyle.

I liked the character development in the book a lot. It wasn’t too fast-paced or too slow for my taste. It was darn near perfect, actually. Characters are the most important aspect of a story for me, and each character in the book was well-developed, captivating, and fit together for a great historical fiction novel.

I DID love the romance. I wasn’t expecting it in a book like this, but it was needed for this particular story. It was part of the main plot, yet light. (But still perfectly adorable, I promise you!) Kit’s anxiety over a marriage expected of her in her new home kept the story moving. Yet then there was Nat… the son of the sea captain and the goofy, boyish New Englander Kit doesn’t even know she loves. (But the reader does, and that’s what important!) 😉 *swoon* Anyone who knows me knows I am a hopeless romantic, and any dash of romance in a book keeps me into the plot line.

It took me quite a while to get through this book – nine or ten days. I’m not sure why it took me so long to read it; it’s a decent length (250 pages) but certainly not as long as other books I’ve read. (I have been in a sort of book slump lately, so I’ll attribute it to that.) However… as much as I want to give this book five stars, it was very slow in the beginning. I honestly wasn’t hooked until the last four or five chapters; thus the four stars.

Definitely a book for anyone to read. SO glad I finally got around to it. I’m actually looking forward to the essay I have to write for school, and that’s a first! 🙂

the candy book tag

Hello, everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve been tagged for anything, but gosh, I do love tags. They’re so… so sweet. And this one happens to be ESPECIALLY sweet (har-har). If you don’t have something yummy nearby, better grab it ’cause this tag’s definitely going to make you hungry.

emily

Thanks to Izel for tagging me in the candy book tag! I’ve seen it around on other blogs and love it. So first off, the rules…

  • When you are tagged, please thank the blogger who tagged you! (Check! Thanks again, Izel!)
  • No one is obligated to participate, even if you are tagged.
  • If you decide to join in, please answer the questions and tag 5 other bloggers.
  • Please notify the people you’ve selected when they are tagged!

Let’s get started with the questions!

rocky road – a series or author that you have a complicated (er… rocky) relationship with

I’ve got two authors for this one. First off, Morgan Matson – because I loved her book, Second Chance Summer – it was sweet and sad and summery and SO DARN CUTE. But then, unfortunately, I was thoroughly disappointed with her other two books even though I really wanted to love them. And then there’s Sarah Dessen… *sigh* Again, I *want* to like them (I read one of her books in the 6th grade, mainly because I got sucked into it)… but they’re rather inappropriate for me, albeit easy to get into. Ugh.

laffy taffy – a book that stuck in your mind long after you finished reading it (or in the case of the candy, stuck in your teeth)

I’m going to go with The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. I only finished it last week but I already know it’s going to stick with me for a long time. Definitely a new favorite book! (Pleeeeaaase go read it!!)

mint chocolate – a book that everyone loved, but you didn’t

Well, about a year and a half ago, when I first started blogging – everyone was reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. At the time I didn’t follow many blogs who read books was into (aka: cleaner books) and thought “why not give it a try?” Aside from the dirty content of the book, I hated the main character, Cath (who was an “introverted,” uber shy bookworm – or fangirl) and I DNF’d it. It just wasn’t for me.

sugar-free candy – a book that just didn’t make any sense

Hmmmm… this is a tough one. Truthfully, I don’t really know of any books that didn’t make sense. I guess I don’t even bother with those types of books. (Just like I don’t really bother with sugar-free candy, LOL!)

sweethearts – a book that made you go “aww…”

I always feel warm and fuzzy when I read The Mother-Daughter Book Club series by Heather Vogel Frederick. It’s reminiscent for me to read the books (I’ve re-read them again and again for about four years now!) and the girls are just so adorable. Also: The Selection series! I wouldn’t necessarily label it as a “light” book, but Maxon and America are SO CUTE I want to squeal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Yes that called for that many exclamation points.)

kit kat – a book that everyone needs to read

THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak. It’s definitely a book I’d recommend to anyone – boy, girl, young, old. Markus Zusak’s writing is so rich and unique. The book is a tad confusing in the beginning, but it’s one of those books that comes together so beautifully in the end. Here’s the movie trailer, but promise me you’ll read the book first! Thank me later, okay?!

snickers brand mixed nut bar (coming november 2015)… a book you are excited for

The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson. You all know I’m an avid fan of Miss Dickerson’s books, and this one hits shelves November 17th. I’ve got it on my Kindle as an ARC, but unfortunately I don’t think I’ll have time to read it before the 17th. Most likely I’ll still end up buying it, because I own all of Melanie’s books and I definitely want to read this!

TAG YOU’RE IT: Madi // Trisha // Ana // Katie // Grace

I hope everyone I’ve tagged can participate!

so, bloglings. what is YOUR favorite candy? (reese’s fan over here!) and tell me a book that’s similar to the candy listed above!

Emily

what made you a bookworm?

Goooood evening, fellow bookworms. (Or morning. Or afternoon. Whatever floats your boat. Or whatever time zone your boat’s in. That’d be cool if you’re really IN a boat. Are you?? Let me know!) Well, that was an odd way to start a post, but here goes nothing.

Shoutout to Lamby for being adorable and posing in the picture for me. ;)
Shoutout to Lamby for being adorable and posing in the picture for me. 😉

HOW DID YOU BECOME A BOOKWORM? I’m dying to know. It’s different for everybody, and I’d love to know the story. After all, I do love stories.

I’ve heard a few of them – some bloggers (hi, Izel!) have only become a bookworm in the past few years (which I think is amazing because newbie bookworms are WELCOME. I hope to someday convert someone and bring them to the bright side. Mwahahahaha.) and others have been bookworms their whole lives. I fall in the latter category.

I’ve been reading for…. forever.

Wait, scratch that. I’ve been fond of stories for forever. Before I could “read,” I’d look in my picture books and make up stories to go along with them. And I always loved an audience. By the time I was three or four, I had some of my favorites memorized. (If You Give a Pig a Pancake and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See? were the very start.)

Here I am reading when I was two or three. :)
Here I am reading when I was two or three. 🙂

I think most of the credit belongs to my parents. They’re both readers and great writers (in fact, when my dad was twelve or thirteen, he began a story about an orphaned boy in the 1920s, which he still has!), so they instilled a love of writing in me from a very young age. The rest of my family caught on quickly. I have loads of pictures from baby albums of birthday presents – clothes, toys, and – guess! – BOOKS! I still have many of the picture books I was given.

In kindergarten, it was Junie B. Jones. In 1st grade, I loved Cam Jansen. In 2nd, the Boxcar Children was all the rage – and any American Girl book I could get my hands on. (My mom started me out on Kit Kittredge, and so began my love for historical fiction.) By 3rd grade, I loved any Middle Grade book I was given. I remember getting The Main Street series by Ann M. Martin at the time, and that was when I discovered one of my favorite authors! Eventually I met the lovely Nancy Drew, the baby sitters club, all of Wendy’s Mass’ books… I was hooked on books.

In sixth grade, I began my blog. From there I started reading books I’d never have picked up otherwise. (The Selection, Stargirl, The Ascendance Trilogy… and many others!) Right now, I’m fixing to read a book about a futuristic world where a cyborg falls in love with a prince – a year ago, I’d have taken one fleeting glance at that book and walked away. Buuuut Brooke, Izel, and Madi are practically virtually on top of me to read it, so read it I MUST!

So that’s the small story of my bookworm life. Along with reading, I naturally took a liking to writing, and I’ve never really found anything else I loved as much. Sure; I have other hobbies. (Well… not many… piano, sewing, and flipping out over various TV characters is basically it) but I know my passion and I see my future clearly. Whatever I do, I always want to be surrounded my books.

how did YOU become a bookworm?! really! i need to know! did a friend get you into books? did your family? by yourself? a particular author or book? tell me below.

the hiding place by corrie ten boom

Wow wow wow wow. This book just blew me away.

I’ve been wanting to read it for quite a while now, and I was super excited to see it on the list of books for required school reading in my home school curriculum. Once I started it, I was hooked! Corrie ten Boom’s real-life story of working with the underground in Holland during the Nazi Occupation in WWII, and surviving a Nazi prison camp, is incredible.

emily

Chapter after chapter; story after story; I just kept thinking “There’s no way this woman’s faith could be any stronger. There’s no way God could provide any more that he already has.” It was so inspiring and really made me think about my own faith and the things God can still do today through Corrie’s story!

The first few chapters walked through Corrie’s life leading up to the Holocaust. Her childhood, her family, the man she fell in love and why she never married. I loved reading about her simple, faithful life in the home above the hundred-year-old watch shop.

Once I reached the parts where Corrie and her family hid Jews in their home, I couldn’t put the book down. Miracle after miracle, I was amazed! The fleas that infested the barracks Corrie and her sister Betsie were in – keeping the soldiers away so that they could read and share with other women the Bible they kept hidden. The oil that helped Betsie’s and other women’s coughs that never ran out until Corrie was able to get her hands on another bottle of vitamins. I loved it.

This is most definitely one of my new favorite books. Five stars!!

have you read the hiding place? do you want to?

october 2015 monthly recap!

WHAT. THIS IS NOT HAPPENING. Tomorrow is November. That’s twenty-six days till Thanksgiving. That means a mere sixty-one days until 2016. That means fifty-five days till Christmas. That means it’s time for October’s monthly recap on FTB!

emily

To be honest, I don’t even remember what I do in monthly recaps. I have to look at the past ones to see what I covered. Because by the end of each month, everything is such a blur. I suppose I usually start with the books I read this month, so let’s go with that…… or maybe not since I read all of TWO BOOKS IN OCTOBER.

This is sad. This is so, so sad. Annnnd… one of them was a re-read. I re-read Rachel Coker’s Interrupted: A Life Beyond Words (which is amazing, as it has been the past dozen times I’ve read it since the fifth grade) and The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom (which was even more amazing, and the review will be up on Monday!)

I’m not sure if it’s the dreary weather that puts me in a lazy mood (because Georgia has been cloudy and overcast practically all of October) or school or what. And November is NaNoWriMo – which means writing 50k in 30 days, and I may start hyperventilating at that thought – so I’m not sure how many books I’ll be able to get to next month. Which means December will be nothing but books all month long. (And I’m already counting down till Christmas break, so let’s do it!) I revised my 2015 reading goal to 70 books instead of 50 (I’ve read 58 or 59 since January?) so hopefully I can read a mere 12 books more. I read that many in a month during the summer, and I miss those days!!

Oh – oh – oh – but I am almost done re-reading Pride & Prejudice, which is nice. I never get tired of Miss Jane Austen.

(Or Mr. Darcy….) (Who declares his love in the rain and LIZZIE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT SHE HAS!!)

Meanwhile, some highlights on the blog were:

emily

50 followers may not seem like a lot, but it’s a lot to me and I’M SO HAPPY! Currently thinking of a super cool giveaway to do so be on the lookout… oh and if you wanna reach for 100 sometime soon and tell your friends and everything that’d be cool. (‘Cause I’d have the coolest giveaway on the blogging block when we reach 100, just sayin’.)

And here are some AMAZING things that happened in October for me…

  • I FaceTimed with Brooke (who most of you know – my pen pal and the sweetest commenter ever and pretty much my best friend and now I’m making her blush!) and I was SO NERVOUS. Also, I haven’t mentioned this to her (so now you know Brooke) but November will be a year ago when she first commented on my blog…. heeheeeheee. It will be our one year friendaversary, Brooke! 😉
  • Meet BEASLEY. My dad finally caved, y’all. We were out for an eye exam and we brought home a dog! He was skin and bones when the shelter got him… almost about to be put to sleep. 🙁 The vet says he’s probably a border collie and dane, and he is positively adorable. (But definitely *not* potty-trained, ugh..) He’s already spoiled rotten and in love with our cat Mittens. (Maisy not so much, but she’s getting there.)

emily

  • We drove a U-Haul truck of donations to South Carolina for flood victims. I’m not sure if I’ve talked about it a lot on the blog or not, but my mom posted on Facebook asking for donations to fill our mini van and drive up there. (It’s my mom’s hometown that was flooded.) That turned into our homeschool group and a few churches in our area donating and it was crazy! (Crazy-awesome.) We stayed with some friends who were just outside the flooding and drove to several churches in S.C. who had 400 people coming everyday for food, blankets, clothes… basically everything.

Some of the moms aren’t pictured but as you can see we had some men for the heavy-lifting! 🙂

I would talk about what went on on your blogs but I’m kind of too lazy so I’ll just leave you instead with a flashback to my first-ever-selfie. In case you’re having a bad day.

emily

I clearly rocked the selfies at 5.

how was your october??

Emily

my collection: the value in owning books.

I own a lot of books.

After typing that sentence, I thought it would be interesting to count how many books I do, in fact, own.

259.

I own 259 books.

If you don’t believe me, take a look at my bookshelf.

emily

I’ve spent fourteen years building this collection, and let me tell you, those are my babies; my prized possession! If you asked me what I’d grab if my house was burning down in a fire? (Rest assured my family and pets are safe, of course)…

I’d look like that. ^ While hatching some scheme to save all two hundred and fifty-nine of my best friends.

Don’t get me wrong. I am a firm believer in taking full advantage of the library. My librarians and I are on a first-name basis and they tease me about the exuberant amount of books I am constantly borrowing. “Heading to the library to pick up a *few* books” is not a phrase I use often in my house.

However…  I believe there is value in owning books.

“When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.” – Jane Austen

Support authors. I dipped into this in my recent post, Supporting Authors, but it’s something I’m always talking about. Support the authors who put out books you like! If you’re looking for a clean romance YA book and find one (please tell me if ya do ’cause THEY’RE SO HARD TO UNCOVER!) buy it! If you want more fantasy and action, send the authors a note and let ’em know! If you like the sci-fi or fairy tales, go out and buy the books, because that’s your quiet way of saying, “Hey, I like this, and I want more of it!”

Build your own library. Re-reading books is important to me – and so is lending them to my friends! Although I don’t have a ton of friends offline who like reading as much as I do – grrrr – I love the feeling of letting my friends borrow books. (EVEN THOUGH I’m paranoid about never getting them back…) I also love going back to a favorite book any time I want. I especially love owning the first copy of a favorite book I read. (Though if I am unsure of a book, I borrow it from the library instead of buying it first off.) Besides, showing off my growing collection is fun! I can’t imagine what it will look like in fourteen more years.

That said… I’m fourteen. I have small amounts of money. (Especially now, as my sister and I are working off our debt to my mom… because… we broke her computer…) I have a $7 a week allowance (which is enough to buy an MG paperback, so I DO get by!) 😉 Plus limited baby sitting money. I have to limit myself with books! Which is extremely extremely HARD. YOU KNOW THAT, PEOPLES. It’s why I’m always on the internet, because you bookworms get me. At times, I feel like people online I’ve never personally met before are ten times easier to talk to – especially because you’re like ME and you get it! Resisting the urge to buy books is SOOOOO HAAARD.

Which is why used bookstores are my fave. Thriftbooks is my fave (an online used bookstore with $1 shipping!!) I use the library, but I am an official book hoarder, and I like to own them!

On the other hand – if I’m looking to support an author, I strongly recommend buying brand-new. Depends on the situation.

do you like owning books? what does your collection of books look like?

Emily

how do you keep up with your blog?

Recently one of my good friends from my homeschool group (one of the few I know offline who know about my blog… I get shy talking about it!) was talking to me and said, “I don’t know how you keep up with your blog. You post so consistently!” So I thought, “Why not write a post on that?” (And there’s a small tidbit from a post: “How do you come up with content for your blog?”) I betcha she didn’t know she inspired a post! So hi, Katie! *waves*

emily

I used to be pretty bad about blogging. If you scroll back to a year, year and a half ago, I posted all of one or two times a month. It wasn’t until January of this year that I sat down and set a schedule for myself. I had been reading posts – “How to get more followers on your blog,” “How to grow your comments,” etc., etc. and all of them said the same thing. “POST CONSISTENTLY!”

Now, I’m still not a perfect blogger and I certainly don’t have a large following (I just hit fifty on Bloglovin’ – THANKS, EVERYONE!) 🙂 … but I do try to post consistently, and because of that, even if I don’t have many followers, I do have pretty loyal ones. I get lots of sweet comments and emails, and they make my day! I’d rather have a small following of loyal bookworms who care enough to write back, than a large following of people who I never hear a peep out of. Where’s the fun in that?!

So, in January, I decided that I loved blogging, and I wanted to do more of it! Beforehand, I’d write up a post in ten minutes and hit publish when I felt like it. That just didn’t work for me. (It might work for you, though, so go for it!) I needed to find a good schedule for my blog that fit well with my own schedule. At the time I didn’t know about a handy-dandy tool on WordPress that allowed me to schedule my posts so they automatically publish at a certain time, so I wrote drafts and hit publish in the mornings. I followed a blog that published on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and I thought it was a reasonable amount.

So I went for it! Thanks to the automatic-publishing tool, I don’t have to worry about getting online (because if I did I’d always forget, especially on Fridays – I have a bible study group and piano lessons!) and if I’m on vacation, I don’t even have to touch the computer. I write all my posts for the week on Sunday. If I’m being an over-achiever that day, I’ll write more. One day I had a lot of time on my hands and wrote posts for the entire month! (Back in the leisurely days of the summer, of course!) Sometimes the posts run out and it can pile up on me (as has happened last week and I told you I’d be on a hiatus. Obviously, that didn’t work out because I love blogging too much, and my system works well for me, so I’m writing this on Friday when I’m not busy!)

If I really don’t feel like blogging, or know I’ll be out of town a week or so in advance, I just send one of my kind blogger friends an email and ask them if they’d like to do a guest post for my blog! Guest posts are amazing. They attract attention to both blogs, and I don’t have to write the post. 🙂 If I’m on a blogging kick (like right now; I’m clearly getting a little rambly in this post), I write up a few, and I’ve got the week done!

And you know what? It doesn’t matter if I did everything that fit my schedule or followed a dozen blogs telling me how to write more posts. It all boils down to the fact that I LOVE blogging. I mean, I told you all I’d be away for a little while… and look how long that lasted! I just can’t stay away. 🙂 You make time for what you really want to do, right?

what’s your blogging schedule like?

Talk to you in the comments!

the runaway king by jennifer a. nielsen

Hi, everybody! I haven’t finished a book in a while, so I wasn’t sure if I was going to put a review up today or not, but I found this on Goodreads and realized I’d never published it here. So here goes! If you haven’t read it already, I’d recommend reading my review for the first book in this series, The False Prince, and then come back here. Also – don’t read this review if you don’t want spoilers for the first book, The False Prince! Go read it and then come back here!

emily

Title: The Runaway King

Author: Jennifer A. Nielsen

Publisher: Scholastic Press

Source: library

About: A kingdom teetering on the brink of destruction. A king gone missing. Who will survive? Find out in the highly anticipated sequel to Jennifer A. Nielsen’s blockbuster THE FALSE PRINCE!

Just weeks after Jaron has taken the throne, an assassination attempt forces him into a deadly situation. Rumors of a coming war are winding their way between the castle walls, and Jaron feels the pressure quietly mounting within Carthya. Soon, it becomes clear that deserting the kingdom may be his only hope of saving it. But the further Jaron is forced to run from his identity, the more he wonders if it is possible to go too far. Will he ever be able to return home again? Or will he have to sacrifice his own life in order to save his kingdom?

The stunning second installment of The Ascendance Trilogy takes readers on a roller-coaster ride of treason and murder, thrills and peril, as they journey with the Runaway King!

WELL!

I come to you reviewing this book 12 chapters into the next one (The Shadow Throne)… and it’s easy to say that this trilogy is destroying me.

However, this book (that is, the second in the series), wasn’t my favorite – between the first, and now, 86 pages into The Shadow Throne, it’s probably my least favorite. But of course, I LOVED this book (I read it in a day and just ask my family – I was quite literally squealing in delight!) Jennifer A. Nielsen is awesome. (Though I might take that back at this point, the way her third book is ruining me!)

At this point in the series, I know that the main character, Jaron, ALWAYS has something up his sleeve. There’s always something he’s not telling you, so I was fully prepared to be amazed yet again at his (or rather Jennifer Nielsen’s?) 😉 incredible wit, and amazing skills… but I was seriously doubting his decision-making skills in this one. I just DID NOT trust him! How was he possibly planning to make it out of becoming a pirate and deceiving the pirate king into thinking he was an orphan, when the fact was the pirate king was out to destroy him?! I just… had no words.

But despite my better efforts, I really wanted to see how Mr. I-Can-Do-Everything was going to make it out of this one.

THEN came the help of sweet Imogen and his dutiful right-hand man, Mott, and I came to relax. A little bit. Imogen and Mott thought Jaron was just as crazy as I thought him to be.

Let me put it this way: the book had me hooked! (All three books do!) When you THINK you’re expecting something, it just happens a completely other way! (BELIEVE ME when I say that!) There’s always something that turns out how you never could have imagined, and I just have no words. I can’t say enough good things about this book (as I think I said in my review for The False Prince, as well!) so I guess I’ll just leave you with this fangirling review. (It’s a complete mess, I know.)

Buuuut you see I gave it four stars. I told you it wasn’t necessarily my favorite book in the trilogy, but I’m starting to realize (as I read The Shadow Throne), that it’s really just leading into what’s happening (!!!) in the third book. I mean, obviously the second book is going to lead into the third book, but this book had no solid conclusion; the third book picks up right where the second one left off, when war is coming to Carthya. (I promise that’s not a spoiler; it’s completely inevitable throughout both the first and second books!) So the book just leads into the REAL adventure (which I’m reading now!!) and it’s not the BEST book in the series. Thus, the four stars.

Sorry if this wasn’t my normal organized review! I just really need to finish The Shadow Throne because it’s killing me! 🙂

happily ever after by kiera cass discussion with brooke // part two!

Hey, everyone! Today we have Miss Brooke visiting us from the comments section of your blog! She’s the sweetest blog follower around, and my favorite pen pal. (Though you probably already knew that, am I right? I just love talking about her!) After last week during our part one co-post discussing the Selection series by Kiera Cass, we just knew we had to do a part two: talking about Kiera’s newest release, Happily Ever After, which hit shelves on the 13th. The book has several novellas featuring Amberly, Maxon, Aspen, and for the first time, Marlee, Celeste, and Lucy! It also has a map of Illéa and some beautiful illustrations – and of course, a bonus epilogue of The One. (Wherein Kiera gives us more reasons to love Maxon & Mer.)

emily
Whew! That was a long paragraph! I’ll turn it to you, Brooke. What did you like best about Happily? 😉

Brooke: Well first of all thank you for the flattering introduction. I am pretty awesome aren’t I *hair flip*.

Anyways I just loved Happily Ever After! Most of the illustrations were so gorgeous! (Except for Maxon….). I loved the map! My favorite story had to be the epilogue. American and Maxon are just so adorable! Though I, surprisingly, liked The Guard too. The Prince and The Queen were interesting. And it was so surprising to see some of Celeste’s thoughts.

Emily: Well you deserve it! Yes, yes you are. Just don’t let it go to your head. We certainly don’t need any more Celestes! 😉 I did adore the drawings. But I do have to say… Maxon just looked too stiff. I know that’s how America sees him at first, but I honestly didn’t like it so much. Aspen was super cute… But Carter’s drawing was my favorite!
I think so, too. The scenes with Maxon and America… *swoons* SO CUTE!
What did you think of The Queen? I could see how Amberly loved Clarkson… I was very confused about him. I both loved and hated him at once! The way she describes his small smiles… However, his reasons for liking Amberly?

Brooke: Lol. Yes! I will do my best not to turn into a Celeste.

Yes! Exactly! And I did not imagine Maxon as a blond at all.( I can’t remember what hair color the book said he had. Do you?) And he did look super stiff. Aspen was adorable. His drawings where how I imagined Maxon!

The Queen was so interesting! It was nice to see how Amberly could fall in love with a jerk like Clarkson because before I was so confused. I get how she could but I don’t think I ever could. I didn’t like Clarkson. With a different life I may have been able to like him but due to his stressful life I think something broke in him. I don’t think he ever really loved anyone. He had affection for Amberly and Maxon but not love. (Lol! I love grumpy cat!)

Emily: I do remember Maxon was said to be a blonde… But I imagined him with a darker honey-blondish/brown if that makes sense. But for Aspen I always imagined him with dark black hair – but the way they drew Aspen more loose and relaxed was how I wished they’d have drawn Maxon!

I understand what you mean. He definitely did not treat Amberly and Maxon well at all. I LOVED Amberly, though. She was so innocence  and loyal. She deserved way better than Clarkson.

What did you think of Celeste’s perspective? Can we talk about The Kiss scene, for a moment? While reading America’s perspective in the regular book, I at the very least thought Celeste cared for Maxon when she kissed him like that. But to be willing to sink so low to have the crown! I was so angry with Celeste! I did love the The Departure, though. She grew a lot by the end of the selection.

Brooke: Yeah…. Exactly! More of a dirty blond then a bleach blond. Yes! I imagined Maxon more like how Aspen was drawn except with lighter hair.
I loved reading from Celeste’s perspective. In the Selection we don’t get to really understand Celeste so I was really excited for it. I know! That kiss scene! I thought she at least liked Maxon but no she was trying to force him to marry her! I was surprised that even she could stoop so low. Celeste has some of the best character growth. She  really changes toward the end of the selection.

Emily: Me too. I am disappointed in how they drew Maxon. 🙁

Ah, well, I guess that leaves it up to our imagination! Cause in my head Mr. Schreave is smokin’. (And also mine.. Move over, America.) ?

I know! I was SO shocked! The whole thing was so disgusting, from both Maxon and Celeste’s ends. But how that I think about it — America AND Maxon were both basically dating other people the entire series! It’s a little weird when you really start thinking about it…
So what did you think of Marlee’s novella? And Lucy’s??

Brooke: I know! I don’t get how Maxon could get that far with her. Her actions where quite disgusting. I know! I felt like they where all sort of cheating on watching on each other in a way. It must have been so hard for Maxon.
I really liked Marlee’s novella. I liked seeing how she fell in love and how her life went after the canning. ( speaking of the canning my heart broke when Maxon was talking to them about it and he was suggesting things that would help because he went through the same things. ). I wish Lucy’s novella was longer. I felt that just as I was starting to really get and enjoy her story it ended.

Emily: Yes, absolutely. It was all totally gross!
I know; it was an odd situation. I’ve never read any other book where it’s pretty much okay that the couple is basically seeing other people. It definitely made for an interesting story, did it not? 🙂

I know, it was so sweet! I just love Maxon SO much!! And all this went on while America thought Maxon was being a jerk. 🙁 Too bad it had to take so long for Maxon to explain things to America. I know. He had his own beatings everyday from Clarkson. Poor baby!
I feel the same way about Lucy. I really wanted to see more moments with Aspen and Lucy! I liked seeing how/why Aspen needed to speak with America first thing the next day, before the announcement of the new princess though.
That’s about all the time (and room in this post!) we have time for today. 🙂 this was the coolest thing to do and I hope we can do more co-posts, Brooke!

Brooke: Thanks for having me Emily! I hope we can do more someday too! Speaking of which

would you guys like to see more co-posts?

nanowrimo, never-ending tbr, & fall!

Hi, guys! Emily here. As most of you probably know, on Friday I confessed my busy schedule and not being able to blog much. At least… I need to take a step back to get on top of other things that my blog depends on – like reading! (If I’m not reading, I don’t have much to blog about, do I?) I’ve also been preparing for National Novel Writing Month, so the posts throughout October and some of November that I do get to write will probably be mainly updates and ramblings, but I hope you don’t mind. 🙂

There are several things I want to talk about in this post. First of all: THIS!

emily

Do you see that little number up there? Do you see it?? That’s 49! Forty-nine of you peoples follow me and read my silly little rambles on the internet, and for that I am very grateful. It may seem like a small number compared to other blogs, but I am proud of my little forty-nine and when we hit fifty… there will be a PARTY! (Hint hint.) So hit that subscribe button to the side (via email or bloglovin) and get going!

ALSO. NaNoWriMo. You know, that thing I talk about every year that I never seem to accomplish?? 50,000 words in the month of November? Yeah. I’m participating! … again. Perhaps this will finally be the year I reach my goal. If you want to follow my novel, I’ll be updating chapters every Sunday and Wednesday here, so hop on over.

Then there’s this tiny overflowing thing called my To-Be-Read stack. It’s taking over the world, it is. Or rather, my bedroom, which is pretty much my little bubble of a world.

emily

There are some pretty amazing books in that stack, aren’t there?? At least from what I’ve been told, that is. Divergent, Rose Under Fire, Cinder, Reached & Crossed… I’m excited to get to all of them, but school-required reading comes first. Right now I’m making my way through The Hiding Place (I’m glad to finally be reading this one) and after that The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I always forget to update my little “Reading” widget, but I’m always checking up on everyone on Goodreads, so you’ll always know what I’m reading here. (Little no-shame self promotion never hurt anybody.) 😉

And then there’s that last thing in the title: FALL! It’s finally sweater-weather, which means 60-degree weather and planting some new fall flowers in our yard! We just planted these yesterday. I think I’m in love.

emily

Oh – and can we talk about Kiera Cass’ Happily Ever After for a moment??! If you haven’t read The Selection series yet, you need to now! I think it’s safe to say by now all my blog followers know how obsessed I am. 😀 Marlee and Carter’s story was my favorite, and the illustrations are GORGEOUS! If you want a sneak-peek, you can read the first three chapters of The Queen (Queen Amberly’s story) and a bonus epilogue to The One (America and Maxon fangirling! EEP!) here. Brooke and I are going to try to do a part two to last week’s co-post soon, so keep a look out for that.

I just noticed I have eight wonderful comments waiting for my approval and response… so I better get to that! Sorry about my lack of comment-replying. 😉

That’s about it for today. Hope you didn’t mind my rambling and self-promo. Also, don’t forget: fifty followers, and I’ll do *something* special (not entirely sure what that is yet, but I’ll brainstorm. Maybe an international giveaway?) ONE MORE, people!
