libraries & book stores & e-books, oh my!

Hi, guys! News flash: I am broke. Really broke. Like, I-barely-have-50-cents-in-my-wallet-right-now-broke. And to top it off, I don’t have any books to read! (This does not include school required reading. I’m talking about fun books here, hello?! (Hahaha, just kidding! …)) So I was wondering: how in the world am I going to survive on an average $7 book per week when I barely make $10 a week?

So I searched “cheap books” in Google and LOOK WHAT GLORIOUS THING POPPED UP!

In case you can’t tell, in my shopping cart on thriftbooks.com, I have THREE BOOKS for a grand total of $10.70. Now, now, because I am a smart Emily and you are a smart person (you’re reading my blog, so of course that makes you smart), I know you’re thinking, “Oh, Emily, but you’re ordering the books online! What about shipping, silly goose?” And my smug, glorious, wonderful answer?

Shipping is free! Yep, you read that right. Do not second guess yourself, dear blog reader.

Never again shall I buy a new book from Barnes & Noble. (Weeeell… do not hold me accountable for that, okay? New books are nice. They smell good.) Thriftbooks.com has saved me.

The library is nice, too, but I personally love building my own library – on a book shelf, not a Kindle Fire.

What about you guys? How do you buy/read your books?

xx, Emily

  1. Honestly, I usually don’t buy books unless I have a buildup of Barnes and Noble giftcards or if it’s from my library’s book sale where I can get books under one dollar. Most of the time, I just borrow books from the library. However, there are some books that I would really like to own, like the whole Tales of Goldstone Wood series. Thanks for telling us about this site. I’ve also heard great things about Book Outlet.

    1. I agree with you, and most of the time when I can get books for free, I will. But I really love to have my own library of books when I can read and re-read books whenever I want. Plus, I always like to have my favorite books on hand. 🙂

  2. I buy most of my books at either hastings or amazon. My mom has two day free shipping so that’s nice. And hastings has new and used books. I had heard about thrift books but I’m always worried about buying used books. Tell me what condition they are in when you get them. I earned a bunch of money this summer babysitting and I still have a bunch left. Also I got a fifty for Christmas from my grandma and grandpa. I have a bunch of books I need to read so I am restricting myself until I finish some of them. I like getting audio books from the library so I can do stuff while listening to a books. I also get books I’m not sure I will like at the library so I don’t spend money on them if I don’t like it. Please check out your last posts comments. I left a link for you in there.

    1. What is Hastings? I’ve never heard of it. What I really like about Thrift Books is it tells what condition the book is in – some say “like new” and some say “fairly used,” etc. Usually the book is pricier if the book is in better condition. Once I order my books, I’ll be anxious to see how well kept they are. If I think I may like the book or I may not, I usually get a free sample on my Kindle first, or check it out from the library on my Kindle. (This way, I don’t have to wait for my mom to drive me.) Any money I can save to buy books is great! 🙂

      1. Hastings is like a barnes and noble but with more different stuff. Did you check out that link in your last posts comments? Tell me if you like it.

  3. I don’t have any money for book either! I get my books from Barnes and noble where shipping costs just as much as the books, this is perfect! Thanks so much! And where do you make your little poster things? like the on that has a picture of a kindle? I need a website that could help me do that and I don’t know were to look! 😛

    1. Yay! Join the club! 😛 I’m so glad I found Thrift Books. I make all my images on picmonkey.com. It’s free and really easy to use, you should definitely give it a try!

  4. Uh-oh, that’s a dangerous website for me! I think my book collection is about to explode. I love to poke through books at thrift stores, but this makes finding cheap books ten times easier!

  5. I buy books anywhere they have them. Like, seriously, I’m not picky! 😉 By the way, I personally love The Beacon Street Girls! (I saw you ordered one!)

    1. Haha, wish I had enough money to do that! 🙂 I actually read the Beacon Street Girls two or three years ago; I borrowed the first two from my friend. I don’t really remember them, just how much I loved them, so I’m going to re-read the first one, and probably order the next ones! 🙂

  6. Don’t know WHY I didn’t think to google ‘cheap books’… that should be a no-brainer 😛 Found that website and now there’s no turning back. 🙂

I usually buy my books used from Amazon, but the shipping is pricey compared to thriftbooks.com. So thanks for sharing!!

    1. Lol, yes! 😉

I usually buy mine from Amazon, too – luckily my mom gets free two-day shipping (sometimes it comes in one day, which is AWESOME), so lucky me. 😀 The books on Thrift Books may take longer to arrive, but they’re half the price, so I’ll definitely be giving them a try!
