everything under the sun! // friday ramblings #3

BOO! Hey guys! I always feel like I start a blog post the exact same way. You got any creative ways to start the blog other than “Hi, everyone!” or “Hey, guys!” or “Today… blah, blah, blah”? I’d really like to hear them! 😉

emily

Today I thought I’d do a Friday Ramblings a little differently. I’m just going to be talking about some cool stuff that’s been happening to me lately. There’s a few exciting things coming up/have happened, and I wanted to share my ecstatic sillies over them with you! Also, I visited Daisy at A Bookish Flower today, and she sent me some questions to answer. It was a lot of fun to do, so today you’ve got 2 more personal posts about me! 😀

1) Rachel Coker’s Dream Factory Workshop! (!!!!!!!!!) Rachel Coker is THE BEST author. Ever. Don’t you argue with me. (Unless Heather Vogel Frederick is your favorite author. Then I digress.) I started writing lessons with her about a year and a half ago, and look forward to every assignment I get, or any critiques she has for me. I AM FLIPPING OUT. I seriously cannot wait! Of course lots of pictures and blog posts are in order as soon as I get back. (By the way, learn more about the workshop here.)

2) Valentine’s Day! Of course you knew Valentine’s Day is coming up (that is, I assume you do!), but I’m doing something pretty cool on V-Day! Since I was 10 or 11, I’ve been wanting to sign up as a ‘junior docent’ at a historical 1850’s circa home near where I live. I get to dress up in the period costumes and give tours of the home. (WHO WOULDN’T WANT TO DO THAT?! BONUS, this counts as community volunteering and looks good on college applications. Hehehe…) Anyway, my mom and I finally visited the home and got some info, and on Saturday I’ll be going to the house to make 1850’s valentines with the other junior docents. (Whom I’ve yet to meet… the lady said that some of them are home-schoolers as well, so that’s pretty neat, too!)

3) A sheep heart dissection. I was debating whether or not to include this in the list of ‘exciting’ things or not, but maybe you’re interested…? I did it today, and it was… not bad. In the fourth grade, I dissected a dog shark and I got pretty into it after a few minutes of getting used to the smell. Today, it was… alright. I mean, it was pretty cool. We dissected the lungs, trachea, and heart, and we could see through the trachea (where the air goes through into the lungs) and the arteries and everything in the sheep’s heart. I was thinking “WOW, these things work pretty hard… my heart’s working right now!” (I hope my heart will always work… until I’m 80, 90-some years old and I die peacefully in my sleep and there’s a memorial for me and my books and my talented children! Lol!)

Well… that’s pretty much it over here, but be sure to stop by at Daisy’s blog, and read the answers to the questions she sent me! It was really fun to do, I’ll have to have her over sometime at For the Bookish!

Happy early Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Emily

  1. I am going to order rachel Cokers books today and I should get them by Monday. Heather Vogel Frederick is my favorite author. The junior docent thing would be fun but I wouldnt like wearing those dresses. You have to tell us how it went on Monday. Don’t worry I’m already thinking about colledge too and I’m a year younger than you. I’m just babysitting on Valentines day. I have never dissected something. It would probably be weirdly cool/ gross.

    1. Oh, great! Which one are you planning on reading first? Heather and Rachel are both my favorite authors. 🙂
It does, doesn’t it? I’m actually kind of excited to wear the dresses… except in the summer, lol.
      I’m actually baby-sitting tonight! 😉
Cool/gross is exactly what it was like. I was going to post a picture, and then I thought “Um… no.” Haha!

      1. I plan on reading inturrupted first. But who knowws what will happen ;).
Cool. How many kids? I like babysitting its fun. It also is a great way to boost your book fund ;). I babysat a LOT last summer. Are you red cross certified? I am.
Good thing you didnt. Some people get grossed out easily.

        1. Three kids. I’ve only babysat for two different families before, one with 3 kids, two girls and a boy, and one with two boys and a girl! 🙂
No, I’m not, yet, but my mom is going to take me to some babysitting classes sometime soon. Yes, it is! I can’t wait to go book shopping, haha!
Several of my friends did get grossed out. I touched it a little, but like I said, it was cool and gross! 😛

          1. Yeah. I don’t get grossed out easily. Except for when it comes to bugs. I don’t like bugs. At all.
My street is full of little kids( good for babysitting. But not good for finding friends) and I babysit for most of them. I think I babysit for about 5 families. I love the kids and the kids love me( well except for one kid who cries when his mom leaves. He’s getting close to two). I enjoyed taking the class. You should take it soon. How much do you charge?
I’m about to order 3 books( good old amazon 🙂 ). Ones about a soccer girl while the other two are Rachels books.

  2. Ha! I don’t like bugs, either. Except for lady bugs and butterflies. 🙂
Oh, that is good for baby sitting! My neighborhood doesn’t have very many kids at all. My family is going to move in about a year, so I’m hoping our new neighborhood will have more kids. Yeah, one family’s youngest is 4, and the other one is 2. I have a hard time putting the 2-year-old to bed, but she’s pretty good when her parents leave.
It depends on the family. I don’t really ask for much, usually about $6-7 per hour, but sometimes the family gives me more (Like tonight, I’m going for 2 and a half hours, and I’m getting $20.) How about you?
Ahhh! YES, Amazon. My mom and dad have Amazon Prime, so I get free shipping and it comes in about two days! I love it!! 😉

    1. We are moving in July. We dontn know were we are moving to yet. Are you moving to a different state or neighborhood?
It deppens on the size of the famjly. For smaller families its usually $3 or $4 per kid per hour. For larger families I usually just have them pay what they are comfortable with paying. The youngest I have babysat for is gavin and when I started babysitting him he was 18 months. I usually don’t struggle with bedtimes. I am pretty strict when it comes to bedtimes. I am looser in other things. I am an aunt too so I have some baby experience. I’m pretty good with kids.
We have amazon prime to. Its amazing! I love two day shipping.

      1. We’re just moving to a different neighborhood.
Wow! I wish you could have seen how stubborn this kid was. I was pretty strict, too, and she was hitting and screaming and I felt so bad because I couldn’t board games with the other kids like I promised! It sounds like you’re really good with kids. I just got a new baby cousin a month ago! She’s so, SO cute. My aunt and grandparents live 2 hours away, though, so I don’t see them often.
Isn’t it? Two day shipping is the best!!!

        1. Wow. That kid sounds really stubborn. I have not had it to bad. The only time I’ve had a kid simalair to that is Gavin. I was babysitting him alone once( without his siblings) and as soon as his mom left he started bawling and wanted to be held. He’s a big baby and he was heavy. I had to hold him for hours and then put him down for his nap. And then when the nap was done I tried to play with him but he just wanted to be held. I was so exausted. Gavin hates when his mom leaves. He starts clutching at his mom as soon as he sees me come! I feel so bad! And then i have to hold him. He’s better when his siblings are home. Other than him the kids I watch are pretty good.
I have one neice. She’s seven months old. They live a days drive away from us so we only get to see them every once in a while. My sister is getting married in June( I’m a bridesmaid!) So maybe I’ll have more neices or nephews soon ;). I have a bunch of cousins and second cousins.
Two day shipping is amazing! We should totally make those t shirts ;p.

  3. You are so lucky you’ll be attending Rachel’s Dream Factory workshop. It looks like so much fun, and the area where Rachel lives is so pretty. I fully expect (read: demand) tons of pictures and blog posts about the trip. 🙂 It’s so cool that you’re going to be a junior docent, too. As much as I probably wouldn’t want to wear those historical dresses as a normal routine if I lived back then, I can’t deny how pretty they are. I do not think I would be able to dissect something without getting sick to the stomach. I’m afraid I’m not very good with organs and veins and blood…

    1. I am VERY excited. Don’t worry, there will be lots!
Haha. I love the dresses and stuff! I’m just not looking forward to wearing them in the summer. Lol.
Believe me, blood/organs/science-y stuff is NOT my expertise, or in my interests. Blech.

  4. I liked dissecting a sheep heart… it was cool and kind of weird, but amazing. (but I’m a bio nerd soooo) The rat was more disturbing because it smelled and I kept thinking about how if I was opened up I’d look the same. Also, one of my partners was not at all squeamish and hacked off the head with scissors and then went around showing people it which was funny but vaguely nauseating.

  5. hello emily, just wanted to say that your the best .I look up to you so much . You are awesome and have great fashion sense .

    heart you ,

    olivia
