so b. it by sarah weeks // grab your tissue box.

Today was one of those icky, winter, lay-in-the-bed-and-do-nothing days… which is the perfect day for reading. (At least in my book. HAHAHA! See there? In my book? I’m so funny.) I grabbed this gem yesterday in 2nd & Charles, a used book store (among many other things) for 3 bucks, and finished it today in a 2 hour sitting… or rather, laying, on my bed.

Twelve-year-old Heidi knows next to nothing about who she is, or where she came from. The only people she’s ever known are her disabled mother who only speaks 23 words, her neighbor, Bernie, who has agoraphobia (the anxiety disorder that usually means you can never leave your house), and her other neighbor, Zander, who’s chubby and fibs a lot. When Heidi’s mother appears at Bernie’s door one day when Heidi was just a baby, Bernie takes the twosome under her wing and takes care of them. Without Bernie, Heidi doesn’t know what would happen to her or her mother, who calls herself ‘So B. It.’

Wow. What a book. It was so good, but it felt so short. Granted, I read the book in 2 hours straight through, but the story itself was a few weeks’, possibly even a week or less, time-wise. SO much was packed into it, though. Authors like Sarah Weeks give a whole new outlook on life altogether.

The main conflict in Heidi’s life is that, simply put, she knows absolutely nothing about her family, or where she came from, or who her mother is. When she leaves the safety of her home and quite literally everything she knows to find out, it’s exciting and mysterious and it’s why I kept flipping the page to find out who this girl is. But one thing that was hard for me to swallow is the ending.

It certainly wasn’t everything you would expect. Or maybe it was the type of ending I should have expected. Either way, the way Heidi puts it in the beginning of the book, “The truth is, whether you know something or not doesn’t change what was.”

The verdict?

  1. Today was kind of an icky day weather-wise for me, too. I still had school, though, so I couldn’t stay in bed and relax by reading a book. *sighs*

Anyways, I’ve been eyeing So B. It for a while now, but I haven’t actually gotten around to read it. It sounds like such a unique and beautiful book, and now you’ve made me curious about the ending. I must read it!

    1. Aww, that stinks. I actually wrote this post yesterday, though! Thank goodness it was Sunday. It’s still pretty dreary today, though, but perks of being home-schooled – I can still stay in my PJ’S!

I had eyed it for a while myself. You should totally read it. The ending comes not so much as a surprise, but it took me back a little… 😉 I’d be interested to hear your thoughts!

      1. Oh, haha. That makes more sense. Sometimes I wish I was home-schooled because it would awesome to just wear my PJ’s all the time, and I would also probably be able to do my own “novel-writing class”. Then again, I’ve gotten so used to public school that I don’t think I could give it up.

  2. It’s pretty gloomy here too, super rainy and super windy, so windy in fact that it looks like it’s raining sideways!
Definitely one of the perks of being homeschooled, being in PJ’s all day and anytime is snack time! 😀 So B. It seems like an amazing book! I have to look into it!!

    1. The whole world must be rainy this week! 🙂
LOL, YES. I would be hungry all the time if I went back to public school, ’cause I eat when I’m hungry.
Oh, it is. It’s one of the greats!!

      1. Surprisingly I’m allowed to eat pretty much anytime I want, and I go to a public school. I’m not sure about other public schools, but I’ve found as I get older my teachers are more lenient about letting us eat whenever. Of course we can’t bring out a whole banquet in the middle of class, but small snacks are okay. 🙂 We are most certainly not allowed to wear our PJ’s, though. 🙁

        1. Oh, wow. I think the teachers do lighten up a bit as we get older, but I was only in public school until the start of middle school.

Haha. Wouldn’t that be everyone’s dream? Although, in fourth/fifth grade, my teacher made us choose between something and PJ day as a reward for something, and PJ day got only a few votes! I remember I was so upset… lol.

        1. Yeah, my school didn’t have snack time either last year. We just lunch! Lol.

Hahaha! The only problem is I don’t get sick days unless I’m running a fever or I’m extremely sick. Small colds just don’t cut it anymore! 😉

  3. Grrr…. Emily! You must stop reviewing books! The more you review, the farther away I get from being able to purchase my TBR list!! 😉

This sounds like an amazing book, even if it did just add another $2.50 to my Thrift Books total 🙂
